San Luis Potosí is located in the central-eastern part of the country, and it has an ancient winemaking history. However, as in other parts of Mexico, winemaking was interrupted due to the many movements that happened in the country. Including the independence movement. Now this state is a very young wine region but the few producers of wine in San Luis Potosí already received several international awards.

As with neighbouring states in the central-Mexico region, altitude plays a very important role in the state of San Luis Potosi. The main wineries in this region are located approximately 1900 metres above sea level, which generates a somewhat higher sugar content in the grapes thanks to the light radiation.

The climate of San Luis Potosí is diverse, with a predominantly warm climate and with mostly dry, semi-dry and semi-desert areas. However, in the north part of the state moderate and colder climates predominate (Sierra de Catorce). The annual rainfall in the state is 372.9 mm and the water quality is among the best in the country. The average annual temperature is 16.8ºC, with an absolute maximum of 35ºC. However, temperatures at night drop to as low as 7ºC, which can lead to frost and there is also a risk of hailstorms.

The few producers that cultivate vines in San Luis Potosí reflect the particular microclimates and soils of the region. San Luis Potosí has a clay soil rich in minerals which provides the grapes with unique characteristics to produce intense and aromatic wines. This region produces varieties such as Malbec, Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Viognier, Nebbiolo, Pinot Noir, Tempranillo, Syrah, Sauvignon Blanc, Grenache, Petit Verdot, Chardonnay and Gewürztraminer.
