COAHUILA

Coahuila is located in the north of the country, bordering the United States to the north. It is the third largest state in Mexico with a territorial extension of 151,563 km² and currently ranks second in wine production.

There are more than 20 vineyards distributed along the wine region of Coahuila which comprises nine municipalities: Ramos Arizpe, Arteaga, Saltillo, General Cepeda, Parras, Cuatro Ciénegas, Torreón, Múzquiz and Piedras Negras. However, it was in the municipality of Parras where the first recorded wine production on the American continent was made, back in 1597.

Parras is a farming town located at an altitude of 1,520 metres above sea level and is an area composed of abundant water tables, which makes it known as the Oasis of Coahuila.

The Sierra Madre Oriental crosses the state of Coahuila from north to south through the central part where the climate is moderate thanks to its pine and oak forests. The climate of the rest of Coahuila is distinguished by being desert-like. Mainly in the south of the state the climate is dry and harsh with extreme high temperatures. It is precisely in the south that wine production is concentrated.

The average annual temperature of Coahuila is 18 to 22°C, higher compared to Parras' average of 14 to 18°C. The highest temperature, above 30°C, occurs from May to August and the lowest in January, around 4°C with a risk of frost and hail. Rainfall is very low and occurs from April to October. However, thanks to the presence of springs that emanate from the sierras, the region is supplied with water.

Coahuila's offer consists of more than 100 labels of varied and high quality wine products that have received the most international awards of all Mexico. The main varieties of this region are Merlot, Shiraz, Cabernet Sauvignon, Tempranillo, Pinot Noir, Malbec and Zinfandel, Chenin Blanc, Sauvignon Blanc, Semillón and Chardonnay.
