Querétaro
In the heart of central Mexico, only two hours' drive from the capital, lies Querétaro, one of Mexico's fastest growing wine regions.
It has unique and extreme climatic characteristics for the cultivation of wines. This could seem unconventional winemaking according to traditional environments since Querétaro is at the 20th parallel of latitude. The wine belt is located between the 30th and 50th latitude in the northern hemisphere.
Nevertheless, altitude is the factor that makes the cultivation of vine in this region different from other areas. Many of the vineyards in this central Mexico region lie on higher altitude sites upwards 2300 metres above sea level, where the radiation of the sun generates grapes with thicker skin.
So, what could have been a tropical region with an otherwise hot and semi-arid climate, benefits from the cool evenings that preserve acidity in grapes. This is what the recognised local winemakers have defined as extreme viniculture.
Summer in Querétaro brings rainfall which reflects in lush rainforests. Nevertheless, arid deserts can also be found in this region. There are 400-600 mm of rainfall and 2,800 hours of sunshine per year. These microclimates and their diversity allow winemakers to experiment with a wide range of grape varieties and styles.
Moreover, the soil offers calcium-rich sandy clay and both good water retention during the dry season and excellent drainage when it's wet, creating a thermal amplitude of up to 20 degrees Celsius between hot days and cold nights. The temperatures can rise up to 35 °C during the day and decline to 2 °C at night.
Querétaro is the main producer of sparkling wine in Mexico but has great conditions to grow red and white grapes. Diverse varieties can be found, such as Chardonnay, Syrah, Merlot, Tempranillo, Gewürztraminer, and also the Cava grapes like Macabeo and Paralleda.
Querétaro is highly recognised as a blossoming wine region with skilled winemakers.
