San Juanito

Collection: San Juanito

San Juanito is the result of the collaboration between Antonio Treviño Salazar and his son, winemaker Antonio Treviño Martínez Estapé. Better known in the wine world as “los Toños”, they started the project in 2008. However, it was not until 2011 that they planted the vines that would create San Juanito’s wine we have available today.

Querétaro has historically been an important region for Mexican wine, where the so-called "extreme viticulture" is practiced, as this state possesses unconventional characteristics for grape cultivation, situated outside the traditional wine belt. For this reason, the first specialists who analyzed the soils of San Juanito concluded that they weren't suitable enough to make good wine.

However, los Toños decided to continue with the project that they were so passionate about, designating a small area for experimental varieties and carefully selecting those that best adapt to the terroir's characteristics. Furthermore, they dare to experiment with what the land offers them, creating not only classic single-varietal wines but also unconventional blends.

The grapes from San Juanito and their careful processes result in concentrated and intense red wines without lacking acidity, which can sometimes even become very special Gran Reservas. Now, these labels have gained the highest international recognition, and with just one sip, it's easy to see why.

The winery also pays tribute to the region by contributing to the community's well-being and funding reforestation and compensation projects. This is how San Juanito manages to be the first winery in Mexico to completely neutralize its carbon emissions.

Winemaker

Antonio Treviño Martínez.

Antonio has firsthand experience with a winery in Italy and his time spent in Napa Valley doing research. He attended the University of California, Davis to study viticulture where he adopted the philosophy of taking care of the land in order to create high-quality wines.

“The plant grows throughout the year and develops the grapes that will be harvested, vinified and bottled; during this whole cycle, circumstances intervene and decisions have to be made, and after all, when we uncork a bottle... The wine remembers everything!".
